WIND MONITORING - WIND PROSPECTION

   Depending on your wind farm project, you may need to measure the wind data at a 50 m, 60 m or even 80 meter level in order to properly evaluate the turbines power production. It is of the importance to measure wind at the exact hub height in order to maximize development benefits and reduce economical risk.

   A tilt-up tower with anemometers placed at anticipated turbine hub height is the optimal solution to directly measure the wind speeds that a wind farm should experience.

   This direct method is a lot more efficient than the extrapolation method which consist of using shorter tower with anemometers at two lower heights to extrapolate wind shear.

   Studies has proven that this method can bring uncertainty of about 1% for every 10 meters, which means for 50 meters to 80 meters it represents 3% additional uncertainty which is a big deal.

   Today’s wind turbines are higher than ever. As we know, wind speed increases with altitude. Considering that doubling of wind speed generates eight times more power, the technology is in constant evolution in order to offer higher energy capture.

   The common turbine hub height currently installed is in the 80 meter range. Knowing the importance of measuring wind at exact hub height, A.A.T. Inc. has developed an 80 meter tubular tilt-up tower to respond to the actual market. We are the only one to offer the possibility to obtain wind data at the 80 meters level with a low cost tilt-up tower.

   This new and improved wind assessment technology has the potential to make wind energy easier to estimate and more reliable than ever.

   The SCOUT line offers the possibility to measure wind at level as high as 60 m and 50 m.

   Depending on your project application, the SCOUT towers will be the SOLUTION to measure wind at exact hub height.

   A.A.T. Inc. offers the more robust 60 m and 50 m towers on the market. They are design to resist the most difficult conditions. They have the highest ice-rated specifications.

Don’t guess the wind speed, measure it at the right height! The usage of temporary and permanent towers is well spread in the meteorological, communication and wind assessment fields. The tower needs to be as light as possible and must be erected with basic tools such as a gin pole. Such towers are generally installed in remote areas and are often in place for a limited period of time, from a few months to 5 years or more. The measurement height needs to be as close as possible to the wind turbine hub height, so that data are credible and bankable. With taller turbines, the necessity of higher wind assessment towers is increased. As in the mining or petroleum industry, wind energy needs prospecting prior to the investment of a full-scale wind farm. We have installed towers in isolated, difficult and uneven ground in some of the worst weather conditions on earth. With this experience and input from our erection crews, we have designed the best solution to get you a wind measurement at 80 meters even more economically.
